The highway code in many countries prohibits the use of transceivers while driving. In order to continue using an amateur radio transceiver while driving, a hands-free kit is necessary that does not distract the driver and leaves their hands free.
The AV-1KM hands-free kit consists of a microphone placed at the end of a long "gooseneck", a comfortable PTT switch and a cable suitable for the radio model in use. The microphone is usually fixed on the sun visor inside the car; thanks to the long and flexible gooseneck, the microphone can be positioned so that it does not obstruct the view. The bistable PTT is installed in an appropriate place, such as the gear lever. Due to the bistable function of the switch, it is sufficient to touch it very briefly; the movement of the hand is the same as shifting gears. If the radio offers the Vox function, this can naturally be used.
The AV-1KM hands-free kit is supplied with different cables, each suitable for a certain transceiver model or a certain manufacturer. This greatly facilitates quick installation; no cable soldering is necessary. The microphone is Electret type (AKA capacitor), the necessary power voltage is taken from the radio's microphone connector. This type of microphone is used by almost all vehicular FM transceivers. With the exact position of the microphone close to the mouth, most ambient noises can be suppressed. The microphone gain can be easily adjusted for the best modulation. The PTT switch box also offers other controls such as Up/Down keys, if the radio supports these functions. A red LED indicates the PTT status, this helps to avoid unintentional transmissions.
The basic AV-1KM hands-free kit contains the cable for the radio with the modular connector (RJ). This is the most used cable for mobile FM transceivers. For Icom or Kenwood radios with a round 8-pin connector (Foster), an additional adapter cable is required.

Warning:
The microphone mounts under the sun visor bulkhead bolt. Ensure it is securely connected and that the cable is routed safely. Make sure the microphone is angled so that it does not interfere with forward vision.
